What is Cancer

The body is made up of very small cells. Normal cells in the body grow and die in a controlled time. Sometimes cells keep dividing and growing without normal controls, causing an abnormal growth celled a tumour. If the tumour does not invade nearby tissues and body parts, it is called a benign tumour, or non cancerous growth. Benign tumours are rarely life threatening. If the tumour invades and destroys nearby cells, it is called a malignant tumour or cancer. Cancer may threaten your life.

Cancerous cells may also spread to different parts of the body though blood vessels and lymph channels. Cancer treatments are used to kill off or to control abnormally growing cancerous cells. Cancers in the body are given names depending on where the cancer originates. Cancer that begins in the lungs will always be called a lung cancer, even if it has spread to another place such as the liver, bones or brain. Although doctors can locate where a cancer begins, the cancer in a patient cannot usually be identified.

Cells contain hereditary or genetic materials called chromosomes. This genetic material controls the growth of the cell. Cancer always arises from changes that occur in these genetic materials. When the genetic materials in a cell become abnormal, it can lose its ability to control its growth. These sudden changes in genetic material can occur for a variety of reasons. This tendency may be inherited from parents. Changes in Genetic materials may also occur because of exposure to infections, drugs, tobacco, chemicals or other factors.

If you have cancer, it is important to determine how much the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

2009-06-08 Fertility Tests: Michigan scientists fine-tune reproduction Detroit Free Press

So colleagues in his department have developed a womb-like environment in a tiny well on a device the size of a credit card. In it, the growing embryo gets a continuous flow of fresh nutrients. And fertility specialists at U-M see embryos grown in the device act and look more like naturally formed embryos than those grown in Petri dishes. Mouse embryos implant better when grown in the device, he said.

Imudia has developed a Pap smear-like test that allows them to count the placental cells. Too few, said Armant, and there may be trouble ahead.

2009-06-08 Mineral Test: Article - "Treatment Updates From the Miami Breast Cancer Conference"

Several bisphosphonates, drugs that strengthen bone tissue, are approved for osteoporosis. And because aromatase inhibitors, a common treatment for hormone-positive breast cancer, can lower bone mineral density and increase the risk of fracture, studies have been done to assess whether bisphosphonates can protect bone tissue in patients undergoing these therapies. Several studies have shown the surprising result that these agents can actually lower recurrence risk, possibly due to direct tumor growth-inhibiting effects.

For 25 years, surgical and medical oncologists have gathered in sunny Miami to discuss the latest strategies in breast cancer management. At this year and rsquo;s meeting in March, a wide variety of topics, including new methods for treating inflammatory breast cancer and whether radiation therapy carries more benefit than risk for patients with small, invasive tumors, captured the interest of more than 1000 researchers and doctors.

THERE are two main types of arthritis: osteoarthritis, which is the most common and affects almost everyone with advancing age, and rheumatoid arthritis, which is less common but tends to be more debilitating.

The most useful strategy for any type of arthritis is to encourage movement. A sedentary lifestyle reduces circulation and promotes weight gain, both of which aggravate musculoskeletal problems. Exercise improves muscle strength and maintains mobility.

Some medication might be purely for pain relief (analgesia) or to reduce inflammation (anti-inflammatories), while others may be to specifically target the underlying disease (anti-rheumatoid medication).
