2006-05-29 Double diabetes appearing in kidsShe pointed out that at the time of diagnosis, the doctor should of course attempt to determine which type of diabetes is present. However if the type cannot be determined initially, the young person should be started on insulin therapy while waiting for test results that hopefully will clarify the situation. Quot;Double diabetes suggests that elements of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes co-exist in the same person. Blurring the issue further is the fact that people with type 1 have family members with type 2 and vice versa. This means that a considerable number of people may be at genetic risk for both kinds of diabetes", Professor Kaufman said.
2006-05-24 New Statesman-The future of medicineICT is going to make dramatic changes to how we manage health as individuals. Take, for example, a pilot study in north-east England on diabetes management. These diabetic patients are all on a database and are texted with a message saying: "What is your blood sugar today?" The patient texts the answer back into the database. If it is within the required limits they get a: "Well done". If it is outside the limits, the nurses computer alerts him or her to call this patient and gives them the telephone number. It is very successful. With the latest technology, the test strip for blood sugar can be read straight into the mobile phone so that the patient does not even have to be asked what it is. In the future, patients could pay to interact with their digital television and say: "I have got these symptoms. What shall I do?" 2006-05-24 A womans quest for sight and seeing machine-Health and Science-International Herald TribuneA womans quest for sight and seeing machine About 10 years ago, when she was nearly blind in both eyes, her doctor recommended a test to find out whether she had any healthy retina left at all. The test involved a large usd. 100,000 machine called a scanning laser ophthalmoscope, which would let the doctor examine her retinas and project images directly onto them. If there were any live spots, the device might let her see. Elizabeth Goldrings eyesight has come and gone over the years. Mostly, it has gone. Now 61, she has had juvenile diabetes, or Type I diabetes, since college, and the disease has pecked away at her vision, causing hemorrhages in her retinas, the fragile layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye. A poet and artist has enlisted the help of scientists and engineering students to create a "seeing machine" that may eventually help people like her, with severely impaired vision, to read, look at pictures and explore landscapes and buildings. - Iht healthscience By Denise Grady
