2006-06-06 RedStateWhat stem cell research strives to achieve is the cultivating and nurturing of stem cells, the basic cell of the body, enabling it to be reproduced to other specific part of the body. The implications are obvious, limbs and organs could be grown from scratch in a lab, and then used in transplants or to cure illnesses. By providing the raw material for virtually every kind of human tissue, new treatments for a wide range of human diseases including diabetes, heart disease, some forms of cancer, and Parkinsons disease can now be developed.
2006-06-06 Bayer HealthCare :: Serum HER-2/neu Change Predicts Clinical Outcome to Trastuzumab-Based TherapySerum HER-2/neu Change Predicts Clinical Outcome to Trastuzumab-Based Therapy The standard method for determining HER-2/neu status is by testing tissue from the primary tumor, usually involving an invasive procedure. A simple blood test to determine serum HER-2/neu levels during the course of therapy is complementary to tissue testing because continuous monitoring of serum concentrations of HER-2/neu allows physicians to follow disease progression and therapy response, thereby guiding on-going treatment decisions. The Serum HER-2/neu Test is the only test that can track a womans HER-2/neu level once she is diagnosed with MBC regardless of whether the treatment is hormone therapy, chemotherapy or trastuzumab-based therapy because it is a serum biomarker for HER-2/neu positive tumors. Bayer HealthCare, a member of the Bayer Group (NYSE: BAY) , announced findings from a study using Bayer Diagnostics Serum HER-2/neu Test that demonstrated metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients whose serum HER-2/neu levels decreased by less than 20 percent experienced decreased benefit from trastuzumab-based therapy. The data, from a pooled analysis of seven clinical trials in the United
2006-06-05 Test may help pick time to induce laborWomen who had a positive fFN test - suggesting the body may have been preparing for natural labor - were 38 percent more likely to deliver vaginally within 24 hours of the inductions start than those with no detectable fFN. And women with negative fFN tests were 29 percent more likely to wind up getting a C-section. Many doctors check for fFN o help determine if women experiencing preterm contractions - between weeks 24 and 34 of pregnancy- really are going into early labor or are having a false alarm. If the fFN test is negative, those women have less than a 1 percent chance of giving birth in the next two weeks, and may be sent home with the warning to call a doctor if symptoms change.
Moua is well versed in the reasons many Hmong are averse to Western medical care. Some, she says, are rooted in a different worldview about how the body functions and its purpose. "Hmong people believe that when theyre born thats all the blood theyll have," she says. "If theyre skinny and they get sick and the doctor wants to take a blood test, they believe theyll lose blood and are afraid theyll feel more weak and black out. "
