2006-09-02 Live fast . die young - (Sunday Herald)

Five years later, and suffering diabetes insipidus, a lifelong condition resulting from the accident which sees him taking tablets and injections every day, he spends much of his time talking to schoolchildren and youth groups about the pitfalls of youthful driving. Most, he knows, will pass their tests either first or second time and drive through life without damage to life or limb. Others, he can presume, will roll their eyes sarcastically, either gossiping or doodling till he leaves.

Basically, I was a nurse for around twenty years in the public sector. Then, there was a demand for an educator for diabetes. It was a project coordinated by Medical Trading and the laboratory Novonordisk. They were going to set up a programme for the control of diabetes in Mauritius. I applied for the post and they accepted me. And in November and I followed a course on diabetes. And in , I started working as an educator. During this period, I saw patients of all ages. But in July this year, the Novonordisk laboratory walked out of the project. Hence, today I work only for Medical Trading. Now I have set up an organisation for children (from birth till 20 years old) who are diabetic. I want to concentrate on children, because they need attention and care.

After days of official hearings before polygraphs became official policy, neither the DOE nor the Congress paid any attention to the scientists concerns. Each of the predictions has come to pass. Wen Ho Lee passed, then failed, then again passed a polygraph, and his polygraphers (both of whom are still working for the DOE) disagree to this day on his veracity. The DOE polygraph program has wasted millions of dollars during the past six months, and will squander usd. 10 million more before the first phase of testing is finished. And, most disturbing of all, the majority of Sandia engineers and scientists who service nuclear weapons in the field have refused to take the test, and the DOE is suddenly without authorized staff to deal with a nuclear weapons emergency. New Blood Sugar Monitors Take The Sting Out Of Testing

The American Diabetes Association recommends people with Type 1 diabetes test their blood sugar levels at least three times a day. Those with Type 2 diabetes may need less frequency, but should maintain some kind of regular testing schedule. Diabetics testing three or more times a day can spend usd. 4 or more daily on test strips. One ambiguous test result, or damaged, mishandled or contaminated test strip can drive the cost even higher.

2006-08-29 Orlando Sentinel - A mothers plea: Get checked for diabetes by Robyn Shelton

In order to determine whether or not a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, health care providers conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends the FPG because it is easier, faster, and less expensive to perform.

In the OGTT test, a persons blood glucose level is measured after a fast and two hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage. If the two-hour blood glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the person tested has pre-diabetes. If the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, the person tested has diabetes.

In the projects early days, the least popular test was the urine analysis, and the team found that disappointingly few workers obliged them with a sample. Craig believes "people were apprehensive as to what we were testing for". Its now made clear to workers that its not a check for drugs and alcohol, but rather for signs of health problems such as diabetes. As word of mouth has spread, more of those being screened have brought samples with them. This has resulted in a number of men being referred to their GPs with suspected diabetes, an intervention that could save them from greater problems down the line.
