Major Imaging Initiative to Shed Light on Little Known Brain DiseaseThe new imaging project, which will begin in early 2010, will obtain several different types of images in each patient. Some will be obtained through structural magnetic resonance imaging, which measures the size and shape of the brain, and positron emission tomography, which examines aspects of metabolism, such as glucose consumption. Others will be obtained through promising new MRI techniques, including imaging to measure the blood content in the brain, and imaging to determine the integrity of the neural wiring, or axons, connecting various parts of the brain, using a technique called diffusion tensor imaging.

Diagnosing diabetes: are doctors being over-enthusiastic-TelegraphThe current medical enthusiasm among doctors for diagnosing non-existent illnesses in their patients has now spread to diabetes. This is a serious condition, which usually poses little difficulty as its symptoms are sufficiently worrying to impel a visit to the surgery. What, then, to make of the news this week that more than half of the newly diagnosed cases last year were not aware they had the condition, which was rather identified by a "routine blood test". It is, of course, possible that some may have had a milder form of diabetes which can often be cured in those who are a bit overweight by losing a couple of stone. But many, I suspect, do not have it at all, as suggested by the experience of a "fit and healthy" 76-year-old reader from Leeds, whose doctor insists he has diabetes even though four
PTSD: Brain Scans May Help Diagnosis in Army Veterans-TIMEThe PTSD research builds on earlier work that showed MEG could be used to detect Alzheimers and multiple sclerosis in infected brains. "These communication patterns are very different from disease to disease," Georgopoulos says. "So the different diseases create disturbances in the communication that can be used as a fingerprint, a signature, for the disease. " He likens the MEG test for PTSD to the blood-glucose monitoring tests regularly done by diabetics to keep their disease under control. Such testing, he adds, could be done by PTSD patients to monitor their progress. "The test is totally safe there are no magnets, no isotopes 1 you can do it as frequently as you want," Georgopoulos says, adding that it also doesnt require dredging up the traumatic events that generate PTSD. "The whole thing takes literally a

![]() 2010-04-22 PositiveID Corporation to Conduct Comparative Laboratory Analysis of Its Non-Invasive Easy Check Breath Glucose Technology versus Current and ldquo;Finger Stick and rdquo; Blood Glucose Testing Method -The Easy Check breath glucose test, currently under development, is a non-invasive glucose detection system that measures the levels of acetone in a patient and rsquo;s exhaled breath. The Easy Check breath glucose detection system combines a proprietary chemical mixture with exhaled breath, which creates a new molecular compound that can be measured with the Company and rsquo;s patent-pending technology. The Company believes that its technology generates a chemical reaction that can be reliably measured and accurately depicts a patient and rsquo;s blood glucose level. This could eliminate a patient and rsquo;s need to prick his or her finger multiple times per day to get a blood sugar reading. PositiveID Corporation ("PositiveID" or the andldquo;Companyandrdquo;) (NASDAQ: PSID) announced today that it plans to conduct laboratory-based comparisons of the non-invasive Easy Check breath glucose analysis system versus the current standard andldquo;finger stickandrdquo; blood glucose testing method. 2010-07-26 Rose Morgan talks about her teenage son Jake s battle with diabetes Mail OnlineWe left hospital after three days. Jake had regained much of his lost weight (hed shed more than a stone, half of which was caused by dehydration) and was eating like a horse, as his body refuelled. When you tell people about diabetes, they focus on the injecting of insulin how awful, they say, to have to do all those injections. Yet none of the people with diabetes Ive met seems to mind the injections, especially as they are now delivered through easy-to-use pens. Helped by a wonderful team at our local hospital, Jake was instantly fine with it. He was also taught to test his own blood glucose, using a finger-prick device and monitor. This he finds more annoying, as its more painful than the insulin injections, and needs repeating several times each day. One mother describes her 14-year-old sons life with type 1 diabetes, and his determination to control his own destiny, following his diagnosis with the condition last year. - Rose Morgan talks teenage son Jake s battle diabetes
2010-06-10 JAMA Article Suggests Need for Additional Diabetes Tests Beyond Hemoglobin A1c -- WINSTON-SALEM, N. C. , June 8 /PRNewswire/ --GlycoMark is an FDA-cleared blood test that reveals repeated episodes of postprandial hyperglycemia/glycemic variability by tracking postprandial glucose levels as they related to blood levels of the molecule 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG). Multiple published studies indicate that 1,5-AG detects hyperglycemia not detected by the hemoglobin A1C test. 1A recent study conducted as part of the international A1C-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study showed that 1,5-AG accurately reflects blood glucose fluctuations significantly better than the A1C test. 1The ADAG study was sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). 2010-06-21 Tips for Buying Diabetes Supplies Health and Fitness TimesGenerally there tend to be quite a few new tools which could assist people with diabetes manage this particular disease just as they manage some other facets of their lives. For example, ever more advanced software applications are accessible which permit you to monitor and examine trends in your blood sugar levels over time. These applications permit you to download as well as save data from your blood glucose meter straight onto a computer and then look at charts which display what percentage of time your glucose levels had been inside normal ranges. You may also be able to observe what percentage of time they had been above or below usual. These applications perform more than simply help you comprehend when your glucose levels shift and when they remain stable. They additionally let your physician evaluate the same data in order - Diabetes supplies diabetic testing supplies test strips glucose meter diabetes drugs glucose monitor diabetes medicines
2010-05-08 And raquo; Making Diabetes Less Painful to Deal With OneMedPlace and raquo; ArchiveUnfortunately, diabetes patients dont always engage in the self-care needed to control the disease. Continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels can help patients make the right choices in managing their diabetes, but the standard method of blood glucose monitoring, in which the patient pricks his or her finger with a lancet, may be painful orinconvenientenough that some patients eventually stop testing as they should. Similarly, some patients may grow weary of daily insulin injections. A variety of factors can play into non-adherence among diabetic patients: cost ofequipment and medication, depression, stigma about the disease, denial and more. However, making it easier for patients to test and treat themselves may help reduce non-adherence among those with diabetes.
2010-04-13 Monogenic Diabetes A Sweet LifeWe live in Alaska, where we do not currently have a full-time pediatric endocrinologist. At the time Cameron was diagnosed, he was the youngest person in Alaska with type 1 diabetes. We were at the Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage Alaska, and diabetic educators came to speak with us during the week that Cameron was hospitalized. They taught us how to test blood glucose levels and how to administer insulin shots. I was already in a state of panic, but a new level of panic set in the first time I saw the needle I would need to inject into my child many times a day. I have always had a needle phobia, which I still have not overcome to this day. Of the many things I would come to learn as I cared for my diabetic infant, however, is that I have more strength than I ever thought possible. When theres no choice, Dr. Philipson contacted Dr. Hattersley in the U. K, a researcher in the field of neonatal monogenic diabetes to verify what that Cameron had the type of genetic mutation that should allow him to transition from insulin to oral medication.
2010-04-30 Bayers Didget makes childsplay of blood glucose monitoringDr. Larry Deeb, pediatric endocrinologist and medical director for the Diabetes Center at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida and a paid consultant for Bayer, said, "As the first meter truly designed with kids in mind, the DIDGET meter can transform a childs blood sugar testing experience from something they have to do into something they want to do. Regular blood sugar testing is critical for diabetes management and one of the biggest challenges facing parents of kids with diabetes is motivating their kids to develop good testing habits. Bayers DIDGET meter adds an element of fun and rewards to the routine of testing and, by doing so, helps ease that parent/child tension that testing often creates. Oral glucose tolerance test - Diabetes is diagnosed if the glucose level is higher than 200 mg/ dL after 2 hours. Ketone testing is also used in type 1 diabetes. Ketones are produced by the breakdown of fat and muscle and are harmful at high levels. The ketone test is done using a urine sample when the blood sugar is higher than 240 mg/dL. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) must be checked every 6 months if the diabetes is well controlled; otherwise, it must be done every 3 months. 2010-05-22 Chris DeWald: Ketones Augusta Free PressIf we dont have enough insulin, then our bodies cant get enough energy. We start breaking down fat and muscle for energy. When fat and muscle are burned for energy, ketones are produced. Ketones (the term we use loosely to describe the keto-acids acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxy-butyric acid) are a breakdown product of fat which is dangerous when LITTLE insulin to turn off ketone production. Although blood glucose levels are usually high if you have ketones, the ketones are not caused by high blood glucose levels. Ketones tell us about the insulin level in the blood. In most cases, blood glucose levels are high when people have ketones. But ketones may be present with a normal blood glucose level. I had the wonderful experience of being the research rat for ketones last night. This reminds me of the Keystone Cops with the Keystone Cops being your blood glucose meter. - Chris dewald ketones stroke stroke awareness staunton virginia
2010-04-04 Diabetes Control Study - Health News Story - WSOC CharlotteThe traditional finger prick test for blood sugar only provides an indication of glucose levels at that point in time. To get an idea of how glucose levels may have fluctuated over time, doctors recommend another blood test, called the HbA1c. When blood sugar levels are high, some of the glucose binds with the hemoglobin in the red blood cells (called glycated hemoglobin). The HbA1c test (often referred to as A1c) measures the percentage of glycated hemoglobin in the blood over the past 120 days (roughly the lifespan of a red blood cell). Type 2 diabetes is one form of a condition that affects the pancreas. When we eat, sugars and starches in food are converted into glucose, a form of sugar thats carried in the blood. - WSOC Diabetes Control Study health Charlotte
