Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common source of hand numbness and pain. It is more common in women than men and affects up to 10 percent of the population. It is caused by increased pressure on a nerve entering the hand through the confined space of the carpal tunnel.

Several are available to see how well the median nerve is functioning, including the nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test. This test measures how fast nerve impulses move through the nerve.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. Symptoms usually start gradually, with pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day, and decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In some cases no direct cause of the syndrome can be identified. Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. However, the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome is especially common in those performing assembly line work.

Anything pressing on the median nerve can cause Carpal tunnel syndrome. The tendons passing through the carpal tunnel can become swollen from doing the same movement over and over, like typing on a computer or playing video games or a musical instrument for long periods of time. Its more common in gymnasts, particularly those who do a lot of handstands, and in people who play racquet sports, like tennis.

The claimant sought to establish the compensability of her carpal tunnel syndrome. The claimant had previously suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome during employment in California, and the working conditions in Oregon had contributed only slightly to the carpal tunnel syndrome. The employer contended that the California condition was preexisting and that, in order to establish the compensability of the carpal tunnel syndrome as an occupational disease, ORS 656. 802(2)(b) required the claimant to establish that the Oregon employment conditions were the major contributing cause of the combined condition. We rejected the contention, explaining:

2010-03-05 Study says doctors face health risks - Pasadena Star-News

For the study, which appears in the March issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Park collected surveys from 317 laparoscopic surgeons. Of those, 272 reported discomfort, including eye strain and hand, neck, back and leg pain. Also reported were headaches, finger calluses, disc problems, shoulder-muscle spasm and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Doctors stand still for hours in awkward postures, repeating the movements for minimally invasive operations several times a day. A growing number are experiencing symptoms from neck strain to carpal tunnel syndrome - and that threatens to chase some from the business.

Next, Employer contends Claimant did not establish through competent medical evidence that he aggravated his pre-existing left hand carpal tunnel syndrome and developed right hand carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of his work injury. In particular, Employer asserts Claimants Physician diagnosed Claimants left hand carpal tunnel syndrome without reviewing Claimants medical records regarding his left hand carpal tunnel treatment in 1998. Employer thus asserts Claimants Physicians testimony was not competent. As a result, Employer argues, the WCJ erred in granting Claimants petition to review to amend the NCP to include an aggravation of existing left hand carpal tunnel syndrome and the development of right hand carpal tunnel syndrome.

The WCJ recognized these two doctors opinions but stated that there was nothing in the records to indicate why they came to that conclusion. The WCJ noted that the employer never brought any information to these doctors that indicated that Dr. Blanda thought it could be a complication associated with the insertion of the IV. The WCJ observed that the expert orthopedic surgeon he appointed to examine Mr. Burns, Dr. Karl Bilderback, testified that anything that causes swelling can cause carpal tunnel syndrom.

2010-01-18 The 20-second test for Neck Pain INDenverTimes

Heres a little test you can try on yourself. Lets say you have right-sided neck pain or a headache. Raise your right hand and let it rest on top of your head as in the picture below (Figure 1. 2). When your hand is resting up there, slightly shrug the right shoulder up toward your right ear, just a little bit is all you need. Hold it there for about 20 seconds and then lower the arm back to your side while keeping the right shoulder slightly shrugged upward. Make sure your neck isnt craning sideways to help. Once the arm is back to your side, slowly allow the right shoulder to relax downward but dont push it down. Has your pain diminished If it has, it is likely you have a poorly functioning shoulder at the root of your chronic neck pain or headaches.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The median nerve runs from the forearm into the hand through an area at the wrist called the carpal tunnel. If this nerve is compressed by swollen tissue, you may feel pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist. This common condition is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The pain is usually intense when grabbing objects or twisting the wrist. In diagnosing DeQuervains, a doctor may perform a Finkelstein test in which the patient makes a fist and then bends the wrist away from the thumb.
