Results from recently announced scientific studies have shown VeraLights diabetes screening system -- code-named "Scout" -- was able to significantly outperform the FPG test and the A1C test for identifying diabetes and pre- diabetes in individuals with one or more known risk factors for the disease. Against the results of a two-hour oral glucose tolerance test used for validation, a prototype of the device was able to identify 29 pct. more patients than the FPG test and 17 pct. more patients than the A1C test. Both the FPG and A1C are blood tests used to screen patients at risk for diabetes.

2006-10-10 MacroGenics Receives Orphan Drug Designation From FDA for Monoclonal Antibody to Treat Type 1 Diabetes: Financial News - Yahoo. Finance

In a Diabetes publication, Dr. Kevan Herold, now at Yale University and a consultant to MacroGenics, reported two-year follow-up data regarding 21 patients who received a single course of hOKT3-gamma-1 (Ala-Ala) within six weeks of their diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The patients who received hOKT3-gamma-1 (Ala-Ala) had improved C-peptide responses following a mixed meal tolerance test, reduced hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, and lower insulin requirements for at least 2 years following the initial treatment compared to the control population. C-peptide responses measure a patients residual beta cell function and ability to produce insulin. HbA1c is a measure of metabolic control that reflects the amount of glucose in a patients blood over a 3-month timeframe.

2006-10-26 Bob Harper of NBCs The Biggest Loser Visits Chicago to Help Residents Step Up Their Diabetes Management

The Diabetes and You: Step It Up to Get It Down campaign was developed in response to a first-of-its-kind report issued last year by AACE showing that two out of three Americans with type 2 diabetes analyzed in a study were not in control of their blood sugar -- failing to meet the AACE-recommended A1C goal of 6. 5 pct. or less for most people. According to the report, in Chicago alone, approximately 68 pct. of people with type 2 diabetes who were analyzed in the study were not in control of their blood sugar. The A1C test measures a persons average blood sugar levels over the previous two to three months. The A1C test complements blood sugar monitoring that patients do on their own, which shows a blood sugar level at the time the test is taken.

Pioneers on genetic frontier

Wolford believes that in five years, there will be blood tests available to tell people if they are at risk for certain forms of diabetes. From there, researchers and doctors will be able to tell them whether they should avoid diets that are high in fat or sugar. The next step will be to determine which medicines will work the best for a patient. Those treatments will be selected because of the patients genetic makeup rather than trial and error.
