2006-11-04 Researchers Report Rapid Non-Invasive Test for Pre-Diabetes: Financial News - Yahoo. Finance

ATLANTA, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers today reported a new screening device that doesnt require blood was able to significantly outperform both the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test and the A1C test for identifying individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a condition that often progresses to type 2 diabetes. Presented at the Sixth Annual Diabetes Technology Meeting, held here, results showed a prototype of the device was able to identify 78 pct. more individuals with the IGT form of pre-diabetes than the FPG test, and 47 pct. more than the A1C test. Both the FPG and A1C are blood tests commonly used to screen and evaluate patients at risk for diabetes. An estimated 54 million Americans have pre-diabetes.

2006-12-01 Bob Harper of NBCs The Biggest Loser and Local Diabetes Expert Visit St. Louis to Help Residents Step Up Their Diabetes Management

The Diabetes and You: Step It Up to Get It Down campaign was developed in response to a first-of-its-kind report issued last year by AACE showing that two out of three Americans with type 2 diabetes analyzed in a study were not in control of their blood sugar - failing to meet the AACE-recommended A1C goal of 6. 5 pct. or less for most patients. According to the report, in the city of St. Louis, approximately 73 pct. of people with type 2 diabetes who were analyzed in the study were not in control of their blood sugar. The A1C test measures a persons average blood sugar levels over the previous two to three months. The A1C test complements blood sugar monitoring that patients do on their own, which shows a blood sugar level at the time the test is taken.

2006-11-13 Genes offer researchers a crystal ball to help them prevent, diagnose and treat cancer

Researchers suspect that abnormal amounts of IL-6 and CRP are markers of biological processes involved in development of a number of diseases, including cancer. IL-6 is secreted by immune cells in response to infection or trauma, and it, in turn, stimulates synthesis of CRP in the liver, which is believed to play a role in response to infections and cellular damage control. CRP has been found to be a marker of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and colon cancer, but its use as a cardiology screening test has been controversial.

2006-11-04 Ukiah Daily Journal - Giving Back

Part of her mission as a Diabetes Educator is to reach and test as many people as possible, even those who are not able to pay. "I go to the health fairs put on by companies or clinics in order to screen people," Debbie told me. At the fairs she finds people of all ages and types, including young people and people who are within the normal weight range, who are at risk for diabetes. She immediately refers them back to their physicians. The earlier people can go into remission, the better their chances for avoiding serious health complications.

Under the new agreement, Bruker Daltonics and HealthLinx will file a joint PCT patent application and share costs associated with the patent and development of the biomarkers. The patent will focus on the use of the biomarkers as a diagnostic test for the detection of "Complications of Pregnancy". It is envisaged that the "test" will be a blood test performed at the first antenatal visit and/or subsequently during pregnancy. The test will seek to diagnose women with a predisposition to a number of complications in pregnancy including pre-eclampsia, pre-term labour, miscarriage and gestational diabetes. Women will be classified as either having a high risk or a low risk of developing complications of pregnancy, allowing the gynecologist and/or general practitioner to undertake more appropriate management and/or intervention

2006-11-09 Monogenetic Diabetes : Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International

This story strikes close to home for JDRF because the simple and painless test that determines if a person has monogenetic diabetes has changed the lives of the Jaffe family, who have been heavily involved with our Chicago chapter for the past six years. Lilly Jaffe, age 6, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a few months after birth, and has been testing her blood sugar and using an insulin pump ever since. But since being re-diagnosed a few weeks ago, she has been able to treat her disease with just oral medication, rather than insulin.

2006-11-10 WEALTH Group Recognizes November as Diabetes Awareness Month

Type 2 usually begins with the pancreas producing more insulin to compensate for an inadequate response to the insulin produced initially. But after several years of this response insulin production may decrease and diabetes develops. This type of diabetes occurred mainly in overweight 40 years or older adults. As more children and adolescents become overweight and less active we are seeing more type 2 diabetics in young people. This type of diabetes usually develops slowly. The symptoms of both Type 1 and Type 2 are very similar. They can include thirst, tired feeling, nausea and frequent urination. There may also be weight loss, blurred vision, frequent infections and slow healing of wounds or sores. Some children with Type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all while others may have vaginal yeast infections or burning upon urination.

A programmed approach to teaching and learning ignores the human element. NCLB must begin to factor basic human needs over a testing companys general suggestions. As one education Web site suggests, Kids really do have trouble learning when they come to school with toothaches, poor vision, incipient diabetes and generally inadequate health care; when they come from impoverished homes, inadequate housing and unsafe neighborhoods; when their parents have to work two jobs to make ends meet.
