2010-08-31 Athersys Finds the Holy Grail in Stem Cell Research

In late 2009, Athersys teamed up with Pfizer to develop and commercialize MultiStem for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. The treatment works in much the same way as its other indications, whereby stem cells migrate to places with tissue damage and help restore balance to the immune system. In addition to working collaboratively with the team at Athersys, Pfizer paid usd. 6 million up-front, is providing ongoing research funding support to the company, and also agreed to pay up to usd. 105 million in milestone payments. Athersys will also receive royalties on sales of approved products, or has the option to co-develop and co-commercialize with Pfizer, which could substantially increase the value to shareholders. Similarly, Athersys is co-developing MultiStem with Angiotech for certain cardiovascular indications, and

2010-08-30 Study Links Acne Medications to Bowel Problems

Previous studies have suggested a link between isotretinoin (often referred to by its brand name, Accutane) and inflammatory bowel disease. However, for many patients, isotretinoin is a last resort treatment for acne. By the time they try isotretinoin, many have already tried antibiotics. Researchers undertook the study to determine if antibiotics may have played a role in the development of inflammatory bowel diseasecommonly attributed to the use of Accutane.

Might say that the pain of acne pales in comparison to that of inflammatory bowel disease. A new study seems to confirm that some acne medications might be the cause of bowel problems in a small number of patients. Meanwhile, lawsuits alleging that Accutane acne medication caused serious health problems in some patients are pending in US courts.

2010-08-29 Broccoli, Plantains Could Help Stop Crohns Disease Relapses

Crohns disease affects seven of every 100,000 people in North America. The inflammatory bowel diseases symptoms include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, fever, fatigue and loss of appetite.

In the study, researchers examined how soluble fibers from broccoli, plantains, leeks, apples and the food processing additives polysorbate 60 and 80 affected or reduced the movement of E. coli bacteria across cells lining the bowel. The fibers from broccoli and plantains prevented the movement of E. coli between 45 percent and 82 percent.

2010-08-27 Inflammatory bowel disease linked to antibiotic treatment for acne - National pharmaceuticals

A large study from the United Kingdom shows an association with tetracycline antibiotics and inflammatory bowel disease. Over 94,000 patient records were reviewed. Patients with acne who were treated with doxycycline, minocycline or tetracycline were more likely to have a diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease. The association was strongest with doxycycline with inflammatory bowel disease. These patients were found to be 1. 6 times more likely to have previously used doxycycline than patients who didnt. The overall incidence of bowel disease was rare, but still showed some correlation with the use of the antibiotics.

2010-08-26 Acne treatment using antibiotics linked to bowel disorder Seer Press

The most important example is the case of Accutane, a popular acne medication, that was linked earlier to inflammatory bowel disease. The manufacturer of Accutane has been slapped with a suit by thousands of patients who allegedly developed serious gastrointestinal problems after they took the drug.

Results showed that those who received acne treatment using antibiotics had twice the risk to develop inflammatory bowel disease compared to other patients. The greatest increase in risk was identified in those who received doxycycline, a type of antibiotic from the tetracylcine class.

2010-08-24 OnMedica - News: Study of 94,000 British teenagers links drugs to rise in Crohns disease.

They found that long-term use of antibiotics appeared to double the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease in these subjects. Of the 207 cases of inflammatory bowel disease diagnosed among the 94,487 patients in the study, 152 (0. 26 percent of all subjects) were taking one of three commonly prescribed tetracycline-based antibiotics and 55 (0. 14 percent) were not.

This potential risk should be considered when prescribing this medication," the authors write, while also urging more study of the connection between acne drugs and bowel disorders. It is possible, for instance, that the risk of inflammatory bowel disease is related to the biology of severe acne itself and not to treatments for it, they note.
