Rheumatoid arthritis testLab tests, a physical exam, x-rays, and possibly a test for the rheumatoid factor. The rheumatoid factor is a test that detects an antibody that is found in roughly 80pct. of people with RA. Please be aware that there is currently no single test that will tell you if you do in fact have Rheumatoid Arthritis.
X-rays cannot confirm the presence of rheumatoid arthritis, but they are used to rule out other diseases. X-rays also establish a baseline for comparison as the disease progresses. The Latex test is used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. This test detects an antibody in the blood called the rheumatoid factor. Rheumatoid factor is present in the blood when the body reacts to inflammation in the synovial membranes. It is not always present at the beginning of the disease, but as the condition progresses, most patients with rheumatoid arthritis test positive for it. The rheumatoid factor is not exclusively a product of rheumatoid arthritis. It is an antibody produced in response to inflammation and other diseases that cause inflammation can also result in an elevated rheumatoid factor. These situations are rare, however, and the Latex test can confirm a preliminary diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
![]() 2010-08-31 DMARDs for Rheumatoid Arthritis Are Slow-ActingA review of 51 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis who had been enrolled in the Toronto Early Arthritis Cohort revealed exactly that -- some took longer than others to respond to DMARDs. All of the patients were older than 16 (average age 46) and experienced symptoms that ranged from 6 to 52 weeks. They had at least two swollen joints, or one swollen MCP or PIP joint and at least one of the following rheumatoid arthritis characteristics: positive DMARDs for Rheumatoid Arthritis Are Slow-Acting - DMARDs for Rheumatoid Arthritis Are Slow-Acting
2010-08-30 Arthritis Patients Benefit from Weight TrainingI have personally treated over 3,000 patients with rheumatoid arthritis over my career as a physician, which is probably more than 10 times the amount a typical family physician would treat in their entire lifetime, so I have a fair amount of experience with this condition. A regular weight-training regimen may help treat rheumatoid arthritis. A study of 28 patients found that weight training led to improvements in basic physical function, such as walking. This is a major improvement, made all the more important because most people with rheumatoid arthritis generally experience a progressively worsening disability. 2010-08-29 Benefit Seen in RA From Combo of Rituximab, Methotrexate - Patients who previously had inadequate methotrexate response see benefit over 48 weeks - ModernMedicinePaul Emery, M. D. , of Leeds University in the United Kingdom, and colleagues analyzed data from 511 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis receiving methotrexate. Patients were randomized to receive rituximab in regimens of 2500 mg or 221,000 mg or placebo, given on days one and 15. The primary end point was American College of Rheumatology 20 (ACR20) response at 24 weeks. Patients on rituximab not in remission were given another course from week 24, while the placebo patients were switched to the 22500 mg treatment. Rituximab plus methotrexate is associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have had an inadequate response to methotrexate, according to research published in the September issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
2010-08-27 Two in 3 hit by rheumatoid arthritis quit workALMOST two thirds of Singaporeans living with rheumatoid arthritis have been forced to leave work, and more than one in three believe they have suffered depression as a result of their condition, according to a National Arthritis Foundation survey. - Rheumatoid arthritis
2010-08-25 Protein produced by arthritis helps protect against Alzheimers - news - Celebrities with diseasesProduction of this protein takes place as the bodys immune system goes into an overdrive and starts production of this particular protein named GM-CSF. There are other attacking proteins as well that are produced by the body during this stage. The researchers were of the view that this protection developed in the body is due to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are taken by the people suffering from arthritis but the tests proved it to be wrong. www.celebrities-with-diseases.com The researchers have found out that a protein named GM-CSF is produced in the body when it suffers from arthritis and it provides protection against Alzheimers disease.
2010-08-24 Knee Arthritis - Hydrogen Sulfide Is Present in Joint FluidPatients, and healthy people. Rheumatoid arthritis patients had higher concentrations of H2S in their synovial fluid compared to controls. Higher levels were linked to disease activity amd lowered counts of inflammatory cells. This suggests H2S may play a role in controlling inflammation -- and this opens the door to further research and potential development of H2S-based treatments. 2010-08-23Corona picked seven well-known conditions to study: type-1 and type-2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Crohns disease, coronary artery disease and bipolar disorder. Previous genome wide association studies have identified severalhundred SNPs associated with each disorder. Corona found that of the top SNPs associated with type-1 diabetes, 80 have been recently increasing in prevalence, meaning that they underwent positive selection. Of these, a surprising 58 are associated with an increased risk of the disorder, while 22 appear protective. Similarly, SNPs associated with an increased risk for rheumatoid arthritis were found to be positively selected. In contrast to type-1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, Corona found that were evolving away from a tendency to develop Crohns disease (that is, more protective
2010-08-19 Evolution: Stanford study suggests disease-causing genes were once beneficial - San Jose Mercury NewsStudying gene sequences derived from a huge 17,000-person database in England, they focused on the variants linked to seven well-known conditions: Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Crohns disease, coronary artery disease and bipolar disorder. Scientists have long wondered why the prevalence of diseases such as Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis seem to be increasingly common -- because evolutions "survival-of-the-fittest" theory should dictate that wed lose such disabling traits. Similarly, they say, there is a strong correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis. Populations with a high incidence of one have a lower incidence of the other. Gene variants that now cause these Type 1 diabetes and other ailments may once have shielded our forebears from infectious disease. - San Jose Mercury News Silicon Valley
2010-08-18 Isotype Measurement May Increase RA Diagnosis - Enhanced serologic testing could speed rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and treatment - ModernMedicine(HealthDay News) -- The chance of serologically diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) could increase dramatically by measuring the presence of three rheumatoid factor (RF) isotypes, according to research published in the August issue of the Enhanced serologic testing could speed rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and treatment The chance of serologically diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis could increase dramatically by considering the presence of three rheumatoid factor isotypes, according to research published in the August issue of the Journal of Rheumatology. - Medical resource physicians doctors MD healthcare professionals medical news evidence-based information CME patient education practice management article summaries peer reviewed journals
2010-08-17 Painful Debilitating Disease More Devastating than Previously RecognizedDespite this difficulty, some researchers have successfully isolated mycoplasma from synovial tissues of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A British group used a leucocyte-migration inhibition test and found two-thirds of their rheumatoid arthritis patients to be infected with Mycoplasma fermentens. These results are impressive since they did not include more prevalent Mycoplasma strains like M salivarium, M ovale, M hominis, and M pneumonia. One study of over 1000 patients was able to identify arthritis in nearly 1 percent of the patients. These infections can be associated with a positive rheumatoid factor. This provides additional support for mycoplasma as an etiologic agent for rheumatoid arthritis. Human genital mycoplasma infections have also caused septic arthritis.
