Sperm Penetration Tests

Sperm Penetration test evaluates whether a mans sperm can travel through cervical mucus. It is one of the test done to determine the cause of infertility and whether it is related to a problem with the mans sperm or a womans mucous. During the womans ovulation, samples of her cervical mucus and the mans semen are collected for this test. In the lab, the semen is added to the mucus in a tube. After sometime, the distance that the sperm have traveled is measured.

Sperm penetration tests evaluate whether a mans sperm can travel through cervical mucus or whether the sperm can penetrate an egg. For a sperm to fertilize an egg ovum, the sperm must penetrate the mucus at the opening to the cervix and travel through it into the uterus and up the fallopian tube. In the fallopian tube, it must penetrate and fertilize the egg.

There are many types of sperm penetration tests, and the value of the results are directly related to your health professionals experience in evaluating the tests. Sperm penetration tests are usually used for couples whose treatment decisions will be influenced by the results of the test. Sperm penetration tests consists of the sperm mucus penetration test and the sperm penetration assay (also called the hamster zona-free ovum test or hamster test).

Sperm / semen

A low sperm concentration may be an indicator of infertility, but may

also be due to a temporary or more long lasting medical condition or physical factor that does

not cause infertility even if your sperm concentration is low. You should consult your

physician if you obtain two negative results.

It is sometimes hard to know whether the sperm problem is the only cause, or just a contributing cause to the infertility. Part of the problem is that numbers are just numbers:

Men with very low sperm counts can sometimes have children

Some men with normal sperm counts can be infertile

One of the biggest concerns of couples involved in an infertility work up relates to the status of the male partners sperm evaluation. While the thorough evaluation of sperm and sperm function should be given high priority in any infertility evaluation, we have found from our web page interactions with patients that often times the couple are told very little related to test results in this area. Or, in other cases, we hear of couples being told about high numbers of abnormal sperm, or low numbers of good sperm with little additional information about what those results mean to their chances for conception.

Sperm fertility test results should be in a fertile man. While there is no substitute for the evaluation of semen and sperm testing results by a highly trained and specialized professional, the truth is that many modern laboratories and even some very well qualified physicians have not kept totally abreast of our changing understanding of sperm function, and our new and evolving views of fertile sperm test results.

We also need to know about the husband whether he can produce enough semen. If he is not able to produce enough semen, we do a certain procedure by which we can directly take the sperm out of the testis," she added.

We also assist the patients in finding out what problems they have," she said. "As the first line of treatment, we do ovulation induction where we make sure the eggs are formed and the sperm are there at the correct time.

2010-08-27 BEL MOONEY: Do we really want to trade the gift of life on ebay Mail Online

Much good has been brought into the world by scientific and medical endeavour. On , Louise Joy Brown, the worlds first successful test-tube baby was born - and though the technology that made her conception possible was heralded as a triumph, it also caused many to consider the possibilities of future ill-use.

So they turn to the idea of donation. Yet some fertility clinics have waiting lists of up to two years, because of the shortage of donated eggs and sperm. That is why some couples go abroad as fertility tourists to get what they need. Or even buy sperm over the internet.

2010-08-25 Trinidad and Tobagos Newsday : newsday. co. tt :

One of the major drawbacks is that a considerable number of men still have a few immotile sperm in their semen for a year or more. Conventional guidelines have stated that clearance can only be given to men who provide one or two sperm-free samples. The fear of legal action if pregnancy does occur has led to very conservative vasectomy protocols.

Our study clearly shows that three months after vasectomy about half of our patients were still producing sperm, albeit immotile and in very small numbers, study co-author Dr. Herman van Roijen, of the urology department at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Tilburg, the Netherlands, said in a journal news release.

Lani Burkman: I originally studied reproductive physiology. Ever since I was 8 years old, I wanted to do medical stuff and help people. I chose not to go to medical school, and that was a good thing, so I got a masters and then went through the Ph. D. program. This was before in vitro fertilization, around 1976. 2010-08-22 Aniston breaks with romantic comedy flops, finally pulls a Switch

The movie spends too much time affirming the bond between the angsty bachelor dad and his even more introverted boy (a touching performance by Thomas Robinson), and not nearly enough trying to convince us that Aniston and Bateman are a match made in heaven. Their chemistry never gets beyond the test tube level -- Wilson really does seem a more likely prospect. But its a kick watching Bateman carry off a genuinely unromantic lead -- Wally almost never says the right thing. Hes funny enough to have us pulling for him regardless.

edition.cnn.com

Now heres a shocker: After a bunch of ho-hum Jennifer Aniston romantic comedies, "The Switch" is actually pretty good. Maybe thats because its more of a Jason Bateman movie at heart: beady-eyed, needy and compulsively self-critical.

2010-08-21 Batemans making a Switch Philadelphia Inquirer

The film relies on a couple of other switcheroos. In terms of the standard formula, it switches mistaken identity for mistaken paternity. It switches the male/female relationship for that between father and son. Its switches the traditional meet/marry/mate order of affairs for the test tube. In other words, its not strictly a romantic farce but a reproductive comedy about accidental insemination.

When she decides to have a baby solo, Kassie rejects Wallys offer to donate sperm. At her "insemination party," the drunk and jealous Wally switches his stuff with that of donor Roland (Patrick Wilson, golden and bold as Wally is ashen and meek). Then, Wally blacks out.

Wally Mars (Jason Bateman) looks great on paper. Its in the flesh that the Wall Street broker resembles Eeyore. Wally is human buzzkill, so gloomy that next to him Woody Allen looks like Pollyanna. In The Switch, the Jason Bateman film his fans have been waiting for, he is the undateable in pursuit of the unattainable.

In his motion, Appellant asserted that the panties belonged to the complainants mother, not the complainant. Appellant admitted having a relationship with the mother and he claimed the complainants skin cells were placed on the panties when she handed them to the deputy. Consequently, he requested that the panties be re-tested against the mothers DNA and also to determine if any body fluid from the complainant could be found. Appellant also claimed that the complainants pants were not submitted for testing. Appellant reasoned that if his DNA was not found on the pants, it would refute the complainants testimony that he forcibly removed the pants and prove he is innocent. At the hearing, the trial court took judicial notice of all the testimony submitted during hearings and the trial. The trial court denied the motion because

2010-08-16 Prisoner a victim, too, DNA tests show Richmond Times-Dispatch

Victim/eyewitness identifications can carry great weight with juries, but according to the Innocence Project, misidentifications contributed to 75 percent of the 258 convictions across the country proven wrongful by DNA testing.

The massive, 5-year-old effort is testing biological material found in old case files to clear people who may have been wrongly convicted from 1973 through 1988, before DNA testing was widely available.
