Sperm Penetration Tests

Sperm Penetration test evaluates whether a mans sperm can travel through cervical mucus. It is one of the test done to determine the cause of infertility and whether it is related to a problem with the mans sperm or a womans mucous. During the womans ovulation, samples of her cervical mucus and the mans semen are collected for this test. In the lab, the semen is added to the mucus in a tube. After sometime, the distance that the sperm have traveled is measured.

Sperm penetration tests evaluate whether a mans sperm can travel through cervical mucus or whether the sperm can penetrate an egg. For a sperm to fertilize an egg ovum, the sperm must penetrate the mucus at the opening to the cervix and travel through it into the uterus and up the fallopian tube. In the fallopian tube, it must penetrate and fertilize the egg.

There are many types of sperm penetration tests, and the value of the results are directly related to your health professionals experience in evaluating the tests. Sperm penetration tests are usually used for couples whose treatment decisions will be influenced by the results of the test. Sperm penetration tests consists of the sperm mucus penetration test and the sperm penetration assay (also called the hamster zona-free ovum test or hamster test).

A low sperm concentration may be an indicator of infertility, but may

also be due to a temporary or more long lasting medical condition or physical factor that does

not cause infertility even if your sperm concentration is low. You should consult your

physician if you obtain two negative results.

It is sometimes hard to know whether the sperm problem is the only cause, or just a contributing cause to the infertility. Part of the problem is that numbers are just numbers:

Men with very low sperm counts can sometimes have children

Some men with normal sperm counts can be infertile

One of the biggest concerns of couples involved in an infertility work up relates to the status of the male partners sperm evaluation. While the thorough evaluation of sperm and sperm function should be given high priority in any infertility evaluation, we have found from our web page interactions with patients that often times the couple are told very little related to test results in this area. Or, in other cases, we hear of couples being told about high numbers of abnormal sperm, or low numbers of good sperm with little additional information about what those results mean to their chances for conception.

Sperm fertility test results should be in a fertile man. While there is no substitute for the evaluation of semen and sperm testing results by a highly trained and specialized professional, the truth is that many modern laboratories and even some very well qualified physicians have not kept totally abreast of our changing understanding of sperm function, and our new and evolving views of fertile sperm test results.

News - Minocycline Treatment Shows No Adverse Impact on Spermatogenesis: Presented at AAD

The results of this study indicate that human spermatogenesis and circulating levels of circulating follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone are unaffected by the administration of extended release-minocycline for up to 12 weeks," said Larry Lipshultz, MD, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, during a poster presentation on March 7.

In the double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study, 2 semen samples were obtained at each time point and the results were averaged for all statistical analyses. Safety assessments included a physical examination performed during screening and after 12 and 16 weeks; clinical chemistry and haematology during the screening period and after 4 and 12 weeks; antinuclear antibodies; thyroid function tests; and reports of adverse events. Following the baseline evaluation, blood and semen samples were collected after , and 24 weeks.

2010-03-11 Modern Body Politics ( WORLD BULLETIN- TURKEY NEWS, WORLD NEWS )

As can be seen, this matter is not limited to abortion. An extreme individualistic approach has opened the road to a claim that reproduction, sperm fertilization or copying carry the and ldquo;right to absolute freedom of reproduction. and rdquo; According to this claim, decisions related to reproduction are no one and rsquo;s business and a person has the freedom to reproduce in any way he/she wants. This is a claim that says topics like cloning, eugenics, multiple eggs and sperm fertilization, mixing animal and human genes, etc. is of interest only to the individual person. Contemporary reproduction rights claim that people should be free to decide which child they want to parent and which one they do not want to parent in accordance with an individualistic understanding. 2010-03-09 Pros and Cons of At-Home Sperm Testing Fertili-Talk

Honestly, this is probably a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. If you are trying to conceive and having problems, you would almost certainly be well advised to go to a doctor or clinic that specializes in reproductive health to get sperm testing done.

So, while the convenience and privacy of at-home sperm testing is attractive, not to mention the cheaper cost, overall it doesnt seem like a good idea to try and self test something of such critical importance.

Zooey and Adam

Zooey, who and rsquo;s on the cusp of 30, believes it doesn and rsquo;t: and ldquo; It and rsquo;s my baby; it and rsquo;s our baby; it and rsquo;s a baby, and rdquo; she declares. and ldquo; It and rsquo;s ours if we decide it and rsquo;s ours. and rdquo; Adam is not so easily convinced. There and rsquo;s talk of an abortion (she had one at 18 and isn and rsquo;t keen to repeat), of a sperm test (he thinks his count may be low), of a DNA analysis (at 12 weeks, with seemingly a high chance for a miscarriage) -- but finally Adam relents to Zooey and rsquo;s determination to bring the pregnancy to term. It and rsquo;s a fateful decision, the harrowing ramifications of which Garrity traces in unsparing, quasi-documentary detail for the remainder of the film and rsquo;s85 minutes.

2010-03-05 Nurse alleges rape, Supreme Court stays DNA test against doctor who claims innocence

The apex court stayed the DNA test on Dr Guptas petition through counsel A Banerjee in which he claimed that the nurse, already married twice, had falsely implicated him in a case of rape after becoming a surrogate mother through his sperm which were actually obtained for another person.

In his appeal, Dr Gupta has claimed no DNA test can be conducted against him or the alleged illegitimate son. He cited a purported Supreme Court judgement in the Goutam Kundu vs State of West Bengal (1993), in which he claimed it was ruled that "DNA test cannot be done for determination of paternity of the child as it may make the future of the child dark. "

According to the doctor, the DNA test was unecessary and illegal as it would only cause stigma to the child born through the woman who was a surrogate mother.

2010-03-03 One DNA test could point to Hennis innocence

The Army began its prosecution in 2006 after a cold case detective with the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office ordered DNA tests on the rape kit of Eastburn and on a blood sample from Hennis. That testing, conducted by the N. C. State Bureau of Investigation, matched Hennis DNA to sperm found in the rape kit, according to court documents.

The state attorney general ordered the review after North Carolinas Innocence Inquiry Commission last week exonerated a man in part because of a problem with the SBI lab. In the early 1990s, the lab did not tell anyone that preliminary blood test results used to convict the man were found to be wrong in follow-up testing.

2010-02-27 Promiscuous female flies save their population - LiveScience

The results show how having multiple mates can suppress the spread of the SR gene, making all-female broods a rarity, the researchers say. Thats because males that carry the SR gene produce only half as many sperm as normal males. When a female mates with multiple males, their sperm will compete to fertilize her eggs. The few sperm produced by males carrying the SR gene are out-competed by the sperm from normal males, and the SR gene cannot spread.

The swabs that were taken from S. P. were sent to a private laboratory for Y-STR testing. Margaret Ewing, a Senior DNA Analyst from Bode Laboratories, testified at trial about the testing done on the swabs taken from Appellant and the victim. The Y-STR testing procedure examines genetic markers on the Y chromosome, found only in males. The testing revealed a small amount of male DNA on the swabs taken from S. P. s genital and anal area. These small amounts were described as non-sperm epithelial fractions. When compared with Appellants DNA, Appellant could not be excluded as a match to the samples. There was only a partial profile available from the vaginal swabs, however, and it indicated that only fifteen percent of the male population matched the samples taken from S. P. s genital area. The swabs taken from the perianal area were
