2006-12-20 Your Life-Kids and Family-MY SECRET GIFT

AFTER losing her baby, mum-of-three Joanne Humphreys wanted to help other women who had problems creating a family and started donating her eggs. Theres just one problem her ultra-traditional husband disapproves of fertility treatments and she has been lying to him for years. Here the 37-year-old tells her story.

I had the coil fitted. But three years on I missed a period and when I went for a scan they found a baby, but no coil. They said it had been removed during a smear test.

2006-12-19 Pharaoh hardens his heart Jerusalem Post

THE FACT of the matter is that this was the day of the Heb-Sed festival and feast, when Pharaoh is reborn. It is also called the Jubilee Festival, as it is usually held after the Pharaoh has ruled for 25 years. The idea is that he has to come to the people and prove he is still strong and virile enough to lead them, to be their representative of the gods. In the early days he was forced to run around the city walls with an onion round his neck. Running was his proof of strength, and the multi-skinned onion a symbol of fertility.

2006-12-19 How Tungsten missed the mark

In 2000, a year after the first test tungsten rounds were fired on Cape Cod, Army-funded researchers at the Department of Energys Oak Ridge National Laboratories found that tungsten could leach in sandy soil. But they also concluded tungsten would not dissolve in water. It was a conclusion that later proved erroneous. The same year, Army researchers who studied the toxicity of tungsten said the metal was far less toxic to humans and the environment than lead.

Genetic testing today starts at the earliest stages of life. Couples planning to have children can be screened prior to conception to see if they are carriers of genetic diseases; prenatal tests are offered during pregnancy, and states now screen newborns for as many as 29 conditions, the majority of them genetic disorders. The journey for Jana and Tom Monaco, of Woodbridge, Virginia, began in 2001 when their third child, three-year-old Stephen, developed a life-threatening stomach virus that led to severe brain damage. His diagnosis: a rare but treatable disease called isovaleric acidemia (IVA), marked by the bodys inability to metabolise an amino acid found in dietary protein. Unknowingly, Jana and her husband were carriers of the disease. When Jana got pregnant again, her daughter, Caroline, was tested by amnio while still in

Personal story: IVF in Barbados

All they said was that it must be my age. When we got to the fifth pregnancy and they realised it was another miscarriage, they had to do an operation. I asked them to take some tests from the foetus to find out if there was anything wrong.

We flew home and then came the day that I did the pregnancy test. I think I was more stressed just before I did that test than in any other part of the procedure. I dont think I slept the night before.

2006-12-16 Phosphorus fertilizer can increase pea and lentil yield on many Montana soils

Soil phosphorus levels may be tested using the "Olsen P" test, which tests for phosphorus levels in soils that are neutral to alkaline (pH greater than 7). Those soils predominate in Montana. When Olsen P values are greater than about 16 parts per million, adding no or only small amounts of fertilizer phosphorus (less than 15 pounds P2O5 per acre) is recommended, because any added phosphorus likely results in relatively small yield increases. "Olsen P levels in the major pea and lentil producing areas of the state are often 8 parts per million or lower, so these soils would likely benefit from phosphorus fertilization," Jones said.

2006-12-16 Natural IVF is on the way-Health-Times Online

Dr Nargund believes that high doses of stimulating drugs are not only potentially harmful but also have been rendered unnecessary by her new techniques of screening eggs. It is the quality, not the quantity of eggs that determines a successful pregnancy,1 she says. 1My research shows that we are able to select the best follicle that is likely to produce the best-quality egg. To avoid multiple pregnancies, this is more important than ever. 1 New ultrasound technology allows doctors to check the volume and speed of of blood flow to particular organs. This is called Doppler scanning, and Dr Nargund uses the latest colour machines to study the blood circulation to a woman1s reproductive organs and to see tiny capillaries and blood vessels that were undetectable until 15 years ago. Her studies have shown that
