2010-03-14 Mesothelioma Vaccine Under Test Shows Positive Results

(THAINDIAN NEWS) Mesothelioma is a fatal type of cancer that is mostly caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. Recently, it claimed the life of Merlin Olsen, a former Los Angeles Rams player. However, the patients of the disease can look forward to a breakthrough therapy that is being tested and the doctors think it is devoid of any side effect. So far the therapies for mesothelioma have not been much effective in extending the life span of the victims and even chemotherapy cannot do much in this regard.

Preliminary test results appear to reveal that asbestos is present in some mill fire debris that was spewed into neighboring areas, but that ash from the fire contains no asbestos.

The majority of asbestos came from the mill and rsquo;s roofing material, according to preliminary testing, though one sample of pipe wrap contained less than 1 percent of chrysotile asbestos.

In an update on the tutoring program that HHS student volunteers conduct from 7:50 a. m. to 8:55 a. m. , Marcum said these students are making a real difference. Some students were struggling with certain math concepts with the lowest test grade being 20 and the highest being 72. Retested after six weeks of tutoring they found some students jumped from grades of 40 to 80. It is possible they may garner a teacher out of the 10 students who volunteer with the tutoring program, he said.

2010-03-08 PCB tests of contaminated former Arsenal site may begin in spring - Watertown, MA - Watertown TAB and Press

David Heislein, the project manager for MACTEC, explained that private property owners who abut the property own most of the surrounding land and may not have a section of undisturbed land that could be used for a sample. Further, property owners may not welcome testing, which would legally require them to report and clean up any found contamination.

During a Tuesday night stakeholders meeting, representatives from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers which owns the property at 670 Arsenal St. and is responsible for the sites cleanup and a local environmental consulting firm told residents they hoped to begin testing for contamination by May 3.

2010-03-07 Asbestos found in ash from huge Libby fire

Preliminary test results show that in four of 13 samples, amisote asbestos is present at concentrations greater than 1 percent. Two other samples tested positive at less than 1 percent. No other forms of asbestos were found.

LIBBY Libby residents are being advised not to clean up large chunks of ash that fell around town during a fire that destroyed a huge plywood plant, because some of the chunks have tested positive for asbestos.

Lincoln County Commissioner Tony Berget said its not the same kind of asbestos that was mined in Libby that has caused sickness, deaths due to lung disease and a Superfund designation for the area. However, he said any asbestos is a concern.

An asbestos consultant spent the day testing the old Stimson Mill fire site for industrial asbestos.

Cislo worries her son could breath in industrial asbestos, also called chrysotile. When the fire started at the old Stimson Mill last Thursday, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality requested samples in and around the old mill. Thats because Chrysotile was used in the roof.

Were told chrysotile isnt as toxic as the tremolite asbestos Libby is known for, but it can still be dangerous.
