While there is a lot to discuss here, we were wondering what should be done to ensure, if we go forward with the home that it will be safe for our family including me (with severe allergies to mold and possible asthma) my wife and 9 month old son who also appear to have allergies. We were told that the rooms in question could be contained and air scrubbed and tested again to see if mold is penetrating through the wall as opposed to being brought in by a workman. If so, we were told that sealing off the wall after removal of the rot would prevent further mold growth. I also know that the remaining mold even if sealed off will remain dormant so if further leaks occur and the seal is broken, mold growth in the wall cavity could return. The licensed mold testing person said she was concerned (i) that even if readings were negative from

The experts who are saying the mold is causing the problem are the "mold" experts who make their livings and career from mold worries. There is no public building in Louisiana that might ot have mold growing in it somewhere. There is no place to move the students of Plantation that does not have a chance that mold is growing there. Like I said a week ago when all this guessing started, and anyone who actually wants to find out to a scientific proof will agree with, all of the students and staff at Plantation will have to be tested for toxin anti-bodies to see if they have been exposed. If they have all been exposed and are not sick, then the exposure is not a general health risk. If the only ones who test positive are the ones who got sick, then they are probably hyperallegic to this, and probably other, molds. Or they are

This is becoming a serious problem. I know of a family who had a terrible problem with their youngest child. He was constantly sick. It just so happened by accident, the mother hit a kitchen wall (a mobile home) and when they had to replace it, they found nothing but black mold inside. Upon further investigation, they found mold throughout the house - inside the walls and ceilings. This isnt just found in mobile homes - it is found in many homes on piers or slabs. Bottom line - this is not only found in schools. Parents who are truly concerned need to get their home tested as well. Those who have stucco outside of their home - beware, this could be more harmful than you can imagine.

It is our experience, at The Center for School Mold Help ( ) that all state and federal agencies are in some degree of denial mode about the dangers of mold and health. In particular, they are misinformed about how to inspect water damaged or moldy school buildings for safety. This includes state departments of health and OSHA, etc. They are woefully behind in understanding the latest research or applying it. Bureaucratic inertia helps noone, in these cases. This leaves the parents and teachers in a bind. The bottom line is, this school district cannot prove the building to be safe and has opened it up for student use. Test results can be obtained overnight, when necessary. This is another example of why parents are saying they cannot trust this district to provide safe buildings. If the remediation was done

Soon after moving into a New York City apartment, Colin and Pamela Fraser say, they began to suffer headaches, rashes, respiratory infections and fatigue. They attributed it to mold. But their lawsuit against the cooperative that owns the building hit a roadblock when the court wouldnt let their medical expert testify that mold caused their problems. This is "unsupported by the scientific literature," the state trial judge said.

Dr. Ammann, a recently retired toxicologist for Washington states health department, recently helped the plaintiff side in a mold case. She says this was the only time she has done so for pay. In the Fraser lawsuit in New York, after the judge barred testimony that mold caused health problems, Dr. Ammann, on her own and without pay, provided an affidavit filed with the appellate court saying the judge misinterpreted the research.

Questions about potentially toxic mold at Plantation began Dec. 8, when Jeannie Philliber alerted school officials that her son, Phil Philliber, tested positive for exposure to a mold toxin. For nine months, Phil Philliber suffered from episodes of vomiting, blacking out, violent headaches and diarrhea before doctors learned that he had been exposed to the mold toxin trichothecene.

Bordelon suggested following maintenance protocol to test the rest of the school, which begins with a visual inspection of rooms. But some of the parents said a visual inspection isnt going to be enough. They want all rooms tested. They said obviously the protocol is not working because no one saw mold in the band room and it was only tested after urging from the Phillibers.

2007-04-20 Toxic mold found at Plantation elementary

Researchers found two types of mold. The first is stachybotrys. Its not very common and there hasnt been too much testing on it because its hard to replicate in a laboratory setting. In order to get sick from this mold, someone would have to consume it. The other type of mold found is cladosporium, which is the most common type of mold, especially here in Louisiana where theres so much moisture in the air.

2007-04-08 Allergy skin tests: Identify the sources of your sneezing

Blood tests (in vitro allergen-specific IgE antibody tests) are particularly useful for those who should not undergo skin tests. Although blood tests can be as accurate as skin tests, theyre not performed as often because they may be less sensitive and are more expensive. If you want to start immunotherapy a series of injections intended to increase your tolerance to allergens you need either a skin or blood test to identify the specific substances that trigger your allergies.

Parents like Rebecca Naquin said they dont know what to do because their children are sick, but they do not have test results yet to back up their suspicion that the mold is the source of the illness. Two children from Plantation have tested positive for exposure to a mold toxin called trichothecene, according to parents.

The board agreed to clean air-conditioning units at Plantation Elementary School, which board member Greg Awbrey said are in a "state of filth," and to test the products of that cleaning after one room on campus tested positive for a mold than can produce harmful toxins.
