2008-07-23 Aidsmap Gay Mens Sex Survey: new data on knowledge of the law, use of poppers, oral sex and testing for hepatitis C

These figures may be over-estimates, as there may be confusion between the different types of viral hepatitis, and it is not standard practice to screen gay and bisexual men for hepatitis C in sexual health clinics. However the researchers believe that responses to the question on positive diagnoses are likely to be more accurate.

As may be expected, having hepatitis C was significantly more common among men with diagnosed HIV than other men. A total of 65 pct. of men with current hepatitis C infection also had diagnosed HIV, and 35 pct. were either HIV-negative or untested.

2008-07-23 Older liver donors not associated with negative outcomes in transplant recipients with hepatitis C

Hepatitis C virus infection is the most common cause of the liver disease cirrhosis and the most common indication for liver transplant for U. S. adults, according to background information in the article. Currently, about 17,000 patients are on the waiting list for a liver transplant. Many medical centers have expanded donor criteria, including increasing age limits, to increase the pool of available organs. "There are concerning reports, however, in recipients with hepatitis C virus that extended criteria donors, particularly older donors, are associated with poorer outcome, especially with early and severe hepatitis C virus recurrence in the donor graft," the authors write.

Receiving a liver from a donor older than age 60 does not appear to be associated with transplant failure, death or recurrent disease in the next five years among transplant patients with the hepatitis C virus, according to a report in the July issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. - Medicine/Health Internal Medicine Liver Transplantation

2008-07-21 Patients of jailed doctor Robert Stokes join push for dirty-needle penalties-Latest News-The Grand Rapids Press

But after the Kent County Health Department issued a health alert last November, urging more than 13,000 of Stokes patients to be tested for HIV and hepatitis, Evelyn McKnight, one of 99 patients infected with hepatitis C at a Fremont, Neb. , oncology clinic, invited Kooyers to join a new organization called HONOReform, pushing to outlaw Stokes type of practices at the federal level.

Of the 776 Stokes patients tested at public facilities (others had tests at their doctors offices), only six were positive for hepatitis C, slightly below the rate for the entire population. State health officials said there is no way to find out whether the six were infected at Stokes office. None tested positive for HIV.

2008-07-21 Hepatitis bout ignited Nebraska womans activism against medical contamination-Latest News-The Grand Rapids Press

She and her husband, Dr. Thomas McKnight, a family physician, traced the disease to the cancer clinic, where a nurse regularly used a syringe to draw blood from patients, then used the same syringe to draw saline from a large bag, contaminating the entire bag. The doctor who ran the clinic taught her to do it that way, the nurse later testified.

Evelyn McKnight beat the breast cancer that could have killed her, but her doctors unsanitary practice infected her and 98 other patients with another life-threatening disease: hepatitis C.

S body probably first invented Hepatitis C, the world didnt know what to think. On the one hand AIDS and mouth cancer already took up so much of our time we just didnt think we would ever need a brand new disease again. On the other hand Tommy made it, and everything he touches turns to bonafide gold. Except, you now, music and albums and basically anything rhythmic.
