Body Fat Test

You can test your body fat by many different methods, but we have developed a method that is both very accurate and convenient.

Body Fat Test

This test is used to estimate your percent body fat. It is usually quite accurate, so if a man got 17 percent from this test, he could expect his true percent body fat to be anywhere between 15 and 19 percent.

For some people, however, the results of the tape measure test may not come so close to their true percent body fat. People who are very, very fit can get numbers 3 to 5 percent higher than their true percent body fat. Because they dont have a lot of fat inside their muscles, very fit people may be lower in body fat than this tape measure test indicates.

Body Fat

Most can tell when were fit. Our muscles become more developed, and our body fat decreases. The waistband of our pants becomes looser, and the thighs of our pant legs may become tighter. This informal measure of lean body weight may be good enough for many of us. But for athletes, and those who are serious about their fitness, a more formal test is needed. This is usually called a body fat composition test.

Highly subjective testing relies on a trained and certified technician testing. Despite the contention that subcutaneous fat makes up about half of the total body fat, there are no data to support this statement. Furthermore, because there is little information on the distribution of fat in the body of the population at large, the validity of using skinfold equations to predict body composition is restricted to populations from whom these equations were derived. Because this type of test often depends on the attending technician, the caliper method may not be suitable for trending applications or obtaining repeatable results

2010-03-09 Skinny people can taste fat better in food than their overweight peers Mail Online

We all like eating fatty foods, he said. What we speculate is that the mechanism is to do with stopping eating. Your body is able to tell you youve had enough and stop.

What this would do in theory is ensure that the body actually would recognise there was fat without there being those excessive levels of fat in the food.

When the test was used on 50 people, the scientists found that their ability to detect fat was linked to their weight - a finding which could help counter obesity.

2010-03-05 Genetics Test Helps Predict Weight-Loss Success, Study Says

SAN FRANCISCOIn the long-running debate over dietslow-fat or low-carbStanford University researchers reported Wednesday that a genetic test can help people choose which one works best for them.

In a study involving 133 overweight women, those with a genetic predisposition to benefit from a low-carbohydrate diet lost times as much weight as those on the same diet without the predisposition. Similarly, women with a genetic makeup that favored a low-fat diet lost substantially more weight than women who curbed fat calories without low-fat genes. The women were followed for a year.

2010-03-04 Are you skinny, but fat

JoAnn is 5 2" and weighs 119 pounds. Sonya is 5 1" and weighs 111 pounds. Although about the same height, Sonya weighs less. They both have a body mass index of 21-thats the relationship between their height and weight - and theirs is normal. But, heres what you cant see with the naked eye: JoAnns body fat percentage is 12. 3 percent. Sonyas is 26. 7 percent.

A recent Mayo Clinic study identifies a problem called normal weight obesity affecting as many as 30 million Americans. Its the combination of normal body mass index and high body fat percentage. Basically it means skinny doesnt always equal healthy.

2010-03-03 Lactase persistence and BMI - milk does a body fat : Gene Expression

The global prevalence of obesity has increased significantly in recent decades, mainly due to excess calorie intake and increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Here, we test the association between obesity measured by body mass index (BMI) and one of the best-known genetic variants showing strong selective pressure: the functional variant in the cis-regulatory element of the lactase gene. We tested this variant since it is presumed to provide nutritional advantage in specific physical and cultural environments. We genetically defined lactase persistence (LP) in 31 720 individuals from eight European population-based studies and one family study by genotyping or imputing the European LP variant (rs4988235).

2010-03-01 How Well Do Exercise Calorie Counters Work - ABC News

The VO2 analyzer assesses a users calories lost during exercise by tracking breathing patterns. First, the user puts on headgear similar to a scuba mask and snorkle. The snorkle is attached to a long tube that is hooked into the VO2 analyzer. Finally, the analyzer records the users breathing pattern as he or she inhales and exhales during exercise. Depending on the quality of breathing, the VO2 analyzer calculates how hard the user is working and combines that data with the users body stats: height, weight, age, and body fat. The VO2 analyzer can then compute how many calories are burned during the exercise.

Which is supposed to help burn extra fat when exercising. Everything is working well as I returned to Aberystwyth University this week to get another DEXA scan and retest my power output. The major news is that I have dropped 3. 8kg and 4 pct. body fat. The DEXA scan is really the ultimate when it comes to body analysis; a series of very low dose x-rays to measure bone, muscle and fat densities on the body.

2010-02-26 Top doc: Fit nation isnt a matter of dress size - Fitness

They arent standing out anymore. Physicians and clinicians have to have the conversation with parents about body mass index (BMI). A percentage of body fat (reading) is better, but thats tougher to do right now. When we let parents know where their kids are (in terms of BMI), it brings them to alertness. Even when parents have their own issues and problems (related to weight), they dont want their kids to have those problems, especially in the context of the childs health.
