stress test

Its true. Stress is often thought of in a negative light--and with good reason. However, stress, both physical and emotional, also helps your body stay active and alert, more prepared for obstacles it may face. Two hormones, DHEA and cortisol, are your bodys main forces for coping with stress. The balance of these hormones can affect how you handle the overwhelming feeling that stress can bring.

A stress test, sometimes called a treadmill test or exercise test, helps a doctor find out how well your heart handles work. As your body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, so the heart must pump more blood. The test can show if the blood supply is reduced in the arteries that supply the heart. It also helps doctors know the kind and level of exercise appropriate for a patient.

During the test, the electrical activity of the heart is measured while you walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bicycle. This measures the hearts reaction to your bodys increased demand for oxygen.

Heart Angiograms Show No Disease in Almost 40 pct. (Update1)

Brenner recommended a switch from stress tests to cardiac computed tomography, which he said has been shown in early clinical testing to be more efficient at identifying patients without blockages. CT may be more costly than stress testing and also exposes patients to radiation. Increased use of CT would most likely reduce catheterizations and cut costs, he said.

About 84 percent of the previously undiagnosed patients for the study had undergone a preliminary test, such as an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, CT scan or stress test, before being catheterized. Those kinds of noninvasive procedures were used more frequently than recommended, according to the authors.

2010-03-09 Gene Variant May Help Some Overcome Adversity - BusinessWeek

Gene Variant May Help Some Overcome Adversity

In their examination of IL6, Cole and colleagues used a combination of computer modeling, test-tube biochemistry, stress studies in animals, and human genetic epidemiology. This approach could be used to identify other genes that interact with social environment to affect human health, Cole said.

Our studies were able to trace a biochemical pathway through which adverse life circumstances -- fight-or-flight stress responses -- can activate the IL6 gene, he explained. "We also identified the specific genetic sequence in this gene that serves as a target of that signaling pathway, and we discovered that a well-known variation in that sequence can block that path and disconnect IL6 responses from the effects of stress. 2010-03-07 ISAT testing: Schools stress over ISAT testing, hope students dont

Its her job to make sure the testing is done correctly and takes place in a non-stressful environment. Things that dont slide during the school year are given a pass during ISAT week, such as gum chewing, which is supposed to serve as a stress reliever. Announcements are banned during testing, school bells dont ring between periods and little homework is assigned.

Sigh. Umm, Patriot- the point of the test is to measure what schools are teaching. So why shouldnt they teach to the test Schools dont get to see the test in advance, so they dont know the exact questions. The test is only legitimate if it measures what schools are supposed to be teaching. So if that is what schools are supposed to be teaching, then why not teach it Im not defending the tests, but there is a little logic lacking here.

WASHINGTON, March 4 (Reuters) - A U. S. Congressional watchdog agency is studying last years bank stress tests, the government exercise that helped shore up public confidence in the nations largest banks.

The government conducted the stress tests, which gauged how the banks would fare if economic conditions continued deteriorating at a rapid clip, to determine the banks true financial state.

The Federal Reserve has said that it plans to use a more "horizontal" approach like the one in the stress tests, to help identify problems that stretch across the bank industry.

2010-02-01 Medical News Health News - High risk patients less likely to die if they undergo stress testing before surgery but low risk patients may be harmed

Toronto -- Patients scheduled for major surgery sometimes undergo specialized heart tests (or stress tests) before surgery to help determine whether they have heart disease. Physicians can use the information from these tests to improve the care of patients undergoing major surgery. Researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) found that specific types of patients who underwent stress testing before major surgery had a lower chance of dying within one-year after surgery, as well as a shorter hospital stay, than people who did not.

If we are to be collaborators and not competitors in governing and delivering services to Rhode Islanders, everyone must commit to taking decisive action that changes how government functions in our state. The answer to declining revenues and fiscal stress is not to raise taxes. There will be continued fiscal pressure on our cities and towns this year. The tools created by the Task Force will assist municipalities to rethink financial priorities and service delivery methods, strengthen long-term financial planning, and to communicate with taxpayers on what has transpired to create stress and develop a plan to alleviate that stress.
