You may wonder why its so important to test your blood sugar every day. Many people dont know how to interpret high readings or what to do about it. Sometimes you may think that the doctor is more focused on the hemoglobin A1C and isnt as interested in the daily blood sugar results. You also might not be motivated to check your blood glucose if you dont understand how you can benefit from the information.

Yet, using a food challenge to identify "baked" and "unbaked" allergies can be difficult and even dangerous for those with severe food allergies. Which is why those diligent food allergy scientists have been working on a blood test that may help those with a serious allergic reaction to milk identify if they can tolerate baked-milk products .

The research was presented at the end fo at an annual meeting for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. We dont have word yet on when or how this test might be available.

San Francisco Bay Area company announces recall of glucose test strips

These strips are used by people with diabetes to measure their blood glucose levels at home. The defective strips are being recalled because they may provide falsely low glucose results when the glucose level is higher than 400 mg/dL.

If you have strips from one of the affected lots, use a different meter, if possible, until your new supplies arrive. If you do not have a second meter, you may continue using the Lifescan strips; however, you must notify your healthcare practitioner if your blood sugar reads above 400. Since the strips read falsely low when your blood sugar is over 400, you may give yourself too little insulin.

Although Xylitol is promoted as safe for diabetics, the American Diabetes Association recommends caution. "The effect that sugar alcohols have on your blood glucose can vary so it is difficult to know how sugar alcohols will affect your blood glucose levels every time," the association says.

Its calorie and carbohydrate content is similar to that of sugar, but because its about three times sweeter, you can use less. Unlike sucrose, agave can be up to 90 percent fructose, depending on how its processed. The higher it is in fructose, the less likely it is to raise blood glucose levels, which is helpful to diabetics.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:

On a normal day, Lewis tests his blood sugar by pricking his finger, and he repeats the test up to five times a day. If he has a low count, he drinks a Powerade sports drink or eats a fruit snack to return it to normal. If he has a high count, and begins to sweat and get thirsty, he takes an insulin shot.

Lewis was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 10 years old. Three of his older siblings - Stephanie, Allison and Brian - all have diabetes, which develops when the bodys immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells in the body that make the hormone insulin that regulates blood glucose.

Randox ( ) provide a high quality HbA1c test for routine monitoring of diabetic or at-risk people, to help prevent the long-term complications of the condition. Numerous clinical studies have shown that diabetes related complications may be reduced by long term monitoring and tight control of blood glucose levels. As red blood cells have a life span of 4 months, HbA1c gives an indication of long-term control of a patients blood sugar levels and compliance with their diet. For routine use, HbA1c levels should be measured every 4 to 6 months.
