After adjusting for age at delivery, race/ethnicity, the number of previous pregnancies, and prepregnancy body mass index, the researchers found that women who gained weight the most slowly during their first trimester (less than a third of a kilogram per week, or just over half a pound) had the lowest risk of gestational diabetes. Risk went up as a womans rate of first trimester weight gain increased; for women gaining between 0. 3 and 0. 4 kilograms (0. 6 to 0. 9 pounds), diabetes risk was about 40 percent higher; for women who gained more than 0. 4 kilograms (0. 9 pounds), risk increased 74 percent.

For the time being, Bowersox seems to be doing fine, so there is really no reason to believe her diabetes, or whatever health problem she has (or had), will interfere with her ability to compete and win as many predict. As long as Bowersox keeps delivering stellar performances week after week, she is all but guaranteed the number one spot in May.

I found Crystals Myspace. she had written a blog about diabetes. She is Type I and was diagnosed when she was 6. She had been hospitalized several times as a child and now wears an insulin pump. What a great inspiration she could be for other kids suffering from this hideous Type I diabetes. ROCK ON CRYSTAL.

Because diabetes runs rampant in her family, having afflicted her paternal grandmother and five of her seven children, the family consistently tested a younger cousin for diabetes when he exhibited telltale symptoms. However, it somehow failed to show up on glucometer readings. Then one day, the 11- year-old boy collapsed on the soccer field with a blood sugar reading of 74.

Another common symptom of diabetes in women is irregular or skipped menstrual cycles, a fact of life Kubias endured for years until her friend -a nurse -urged her to seek further testing at McMaster Hospital. "She said if youre having problems being diagnosed, you should always go to a teaching hospital because they are looking for answers instead of just treating symptoms. "

DEAR ABBY: In March of last year, I saw your column about the upcoming World Kidney Day when the National Kidney Foundation would offer free screenings around the country through their Kidney Early Evaluation Program (or KEEP). You encouraged your readers to find the location of their local KEEP screenings, so I did andmdash; figuring I had nothing to lose. Well, my lab tests from the screening showed that my kidneys had not been properly filtering toxins from my body. Armed with those test results I made an appointment with my doctor. She had never checked my kidney function before. Once she saw the results of my kidney function tests were low, she suggested major diet and exercise changes and took me off two medications.
