The HIV virus

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the HIV virus. The HIV virus destroys the bodys ability to fight infections.

The HIV virus spreads primarily through shared blood. Transmitted under sexual activity or shared needles used by an HIV infected drug user.

HIV infected people or people who have AIDS have a weak immune system and their body cannot fight the disease.

Early signs include extreme tiredness and fever. During later stages of AIDS, cancer or pneumonia may lead to the AIDS infected death.

At the moment are there no cure for AIDS, but there are medications that can keep it somewhat under control by slowing the AIDS virus progress.

2010-08-30 Study aims to test if cash incentives can reduce HIV - Times LIVE

Nearly 2 000 pupils at seven high schools in South Africa will each receive R2 700 in total over the next three years if they achieve top academic results and take regular HIV tests.

The payments will form part of a scientific trial which starts next year in KwaZulu-Natals Vulindlela district, in a bid to determine whether cash incentives can help to reduce new HIV infections among young pupils.

Half of those taking part in the project, known as reducing HIV among adolescents (RHIVA), will form part of the control group and will not receive any money.

2010-08-27 Mmegi Online :: Testing for HIV in the belly of the Kalahari

I have to admit that like any other person, I would not like to test positive for HIV or any other disease for that matter but something deep down in my heart tells me that being HIV positive should not be seen as a death sentence especially in a country that offers the lifesaving antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) for free. Surely if one follows his or her doctors recommendations, he or she can live longer

It also goes without saying that many young urbanites feel that they cannot easily be infected with AIDS as they believe it is a disease that mostly affects people from rural areas. This was demonstrated when I tried to ask my travelling companions to accompany me to Tebelopele. One of them gave an excuse that he did not want to die in the desert. I interpreted that to mean that his greatest fear was that if he tested positive, he would be tempted to commit suicide in Gantsi. I began to wonder if it would be possible for me to kill myself if I were to test positive.

Testing for HIV in Gaborone is not an easy thing especially if you do not have time to spare because of the long queues so, I was elated when it was recently announced during the annual Kuru San Dance Festival that Tebelopele Voluntary Counselling Centre had pitched a caravan where people could go for tests.

2010-08-26 New finding could lead to novel HIV treatments - Oneindia News

TRIM5a consists of nearly 500 amino acid subunits. Loyola researchers have identified six 6 individual amino acids, located in a previously little-studied region of the TRIM5a protein, that are critical in the ability of the protein to inhibit viral infection. When these amino acids were altered in human cells, TRIM5a lost its ability to block HIV-1 infection.

Once these critical amino acids are identified, it might be possible to genetically engineer TRIM5a to make it more effective in humans. Moreover, a better understanding of the underlying mechanism of action might enable the development of drugs that mimic TRIM5a action, Campbell said.

2010-08-25 Brain can act as a haven for HIV virus: Study

Both results indicate that current HIV treatment techniques are inadequate when it comes to the brain. It also doesnt clearly show if the residual inflammation or small quantities of virus in the spinal fluid in some of the patients entail a risk of future complications. (ANI)

Although current anti-HIV drugs are able to stop the multiplication of the virus, it can infect the brain and can cause damage if the infection is not treated.

A thesis from University of Gothenburg, Sweden revealed that 10 percent patients showed traces of the virus in their spinal fluid but not in their blood.

2010-08-24 These HIV+ are taught to be positive - Bangalore - City - The Times of India

They nurture dreams like any other child of their age, their hopes are the same, they are energetic and enthusiastic too. But their systems have been battling the deadly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) right from birth.

When they grow up and become sexually active, they become potentially dangerous in transmitting the virus. Initially, we used to send our children to nearby schools. Once a teacher in the school noticed one of our boys growing intimate with a girl from his class and alerted us. We were totally unprepared to handle such a situation. That is when we started this new venture with 20 children where they are given value-based education," he adds.

2010-08-22 FDA-approved cancer drugs that may fight HIV identified - Hindustan Times

The two drugs, decitabine and gemcitabine - both FDA approved and currently used in pre-cancer and cancer therapy - were found to eliminate HIV infection in the mouse model by causing the virus to mutate itself to death - an outcome researchers dubbed "lethal mutagenesis. "

The researchers are now in the process of modifying the drugs to forms that can be absorbed by the human body when taken orally.

2010-08-21 Specific eradication of HIV-1 from infected cultured cells

A correlation between increase in the integration of Human Immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) cDNA and cell death was previously established. Here we show that combination of peptides that stimulate integration together with the protease inhibitor Ro 31-8959 caused apoptotic cell death of HIV infected cells with total extermination of the virus.
