The HIV virus

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the HIV virus. The HIV virus destroys the bodys ability to fight infections.

The HIV virus spreads primarily through shared blood. Transmitted under sexual activity or shared needles used by an HIV infected drug user.

HIV infected people or people who have AIDS have a weak immune system and their body cannot fight the disease.

Early signs include extreme tiredness and fever. During later stages of AIDS, cancer or pneumonia may lead to the AIDS infected death.

At the moment are there no cure for AIDS, but there are medications that can keep it somewhat under control by slowing the AIDS virus progress.

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA has urged the government to give greater attention to education on HIV/AIDS and counselling for the victims instead of having mandatory HIV tests for non-Muslim couples.

MCA government policy monitoring bureau chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said pre-marital HIV testing was not an effective measure to control the spread of the virus.

A lot of manpower and financial resources are committed to HIV testing, which has a pick-up rate of only five out of 10,000 cases.

2009-01-03 Chemical and Engineering News: Science and Technology Concentrates - Protease Flaps Give HIV Drugs The Slip

Other teams have surmised that the mutations affect the mobility of two gate-keeping molecular flaps near the active site. To test that idea, Fanuccis team used EPR to measure how the distribution of distances between flaps changes in different drug-resistant HIV-1 proteases. Simmerlings team then built a computer model that jibed with the EPR data and provides a molecular view of how the proteases move around. The mutations alter the flaps flexibility, possibly changing the way the gate engages inhibitors, the team says.

With regard to Third World HIV testing, the BrightSPOT Reader "is less expensive than processing in a lab, and it also has an increased value because it happens in the village," Mitchell says. Health-care providers can take measures immediately, "rather than go back later and find that person who tested positive - and everybody that person has slept with. "

The exact position of the spot corresponds to a given disease, tipping off a PDA-based reader to deliver test results on the spot. "You and rsquo;re able to do this at the point of care," Mitchell says. "The current way of testing people, you have to have a lab that runs the test nearby. " Mitchell says there are some "dipstick" tests on the market, but they "do not have the degree of differentiation of our test. "

On the next encounter, when the patient returns to be informed of the findings of the HIV test, assign code V65. 44, HIV counseling, if the results are negative. If the results are positive but the patient is asymptomatic, assign code V08, Asymptomatic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Infection. And of course, if the findings are positive and the patient is symptomatic, assign code 042, HIV Infection, with additional codes for the HIV-related conditions or symptoms. Ensure that code V02. 9 (Carrier or suspected carrier of infectious disease, other specified infectious organism) is not assigned if the patient is HIV positive. Unlike other contagious diseases in which the patient can transmit the disease but may be asymptomatic, once the patient has tested positive for HIV, he/she is infected and can also transmit the disease.

2009-01-01 AIDS Denialist Dies in California :: EDGE Boston

The article did not specify Maggione and rsquo;s cause of death, but it did trace her rise to national prominence as a so-called "AIDS denier" for having challenged the prevalent understanding that AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.

The death of Christine Maggiore is tragic just as her life was tragic. She was mislead by Peter Duesberg and David Rasnick and other AIDS Denialists. Ultimately she promoted their pseudoscience at her own peril. Many others were harmed by her relentless promoting of false information that confused people about HIV testing and treatment. We should respect the decision of an informed person to refuse treatment for any serious medical condition. But the problem with AIDS denialism is that people are making testing and treatment decisions based on misinformation and disinformation spread by AIDS pseudoscientists and conspiracy theorists. The sad story of AIDS denialism that enmeshed Christine Maggiore is told in a new book Denying AIDS: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience, and Human Tragedy (all Royalties donated to buy HIV medications
