And a cervical cell line he established was used by researchers who created a vaccine for the human papilloma virus, which causes cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers.

While at Johns Hopkins, Pattillo had an opportunity to work with Dr. George Gey, who established the Tissue Culture Laboratory at the university and was the first doctor to successfully grow human cells outside the body.

He had a rather practical endeavor to see how the human body could repair damaged organs and parts to pre-damaged or diseased condition.

2009-01-06 Opinions - Theres a time for everything -- even to be blunt

Public health officials agree abstinence is the best way of avoiding human papilloma virus (HPV), yet berate and bully school boards and families who prefer to teach abstinence rather than vaccinate minors.

Pro-life clubs on university campuses live under the tyranny of choice, which brooks no alternative viewpoint. Pro-life legislators have a secret pro-life caucus for fear of party reprisals against them should they be openly pro-life. Pro-life groups are denied equal opportunity in advertising because theirs is a politically incorrect ideology. Kangaroo courts under the guise of human rights commissions drag individuals before them with impunity.

2009-01-06 HPV not just a threat to women, research shows Star-Gazette

In men, HPV may cause genital warts and cancer. Although cervical cancer is more prevalent than the penile and anal cancers that arise in men due to HPV, men are nonetheless afflicted by these cancers. More common, however, are the cases of head and neck cancers in men that are linked to the virus. Although they were once solely attributed to drinking and smoking, head and neck cancers resulting from HPV are becoming increasingly prevalent among younger men. Moreover, the male role in spreading HPV to women cannot be overlooked. Not only will a vaccination for men prevent these diseases, but it will also inevitably decrease the prevalence of HPV in women and cervical cancer.

STATEN ISLAND, N. Y. -- On , the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") approved the Gardasil vaccine. This vaccine is the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions, and genital warts due to the human papillomavirus ("HPV") in females. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. At least 50 percent of sexually active people will get HPV at some time in their lives.

Gardasil is highly effective in preventing four types of HPV in those who have not been previously exposed to HPV. This vaccine targets HPV types that cause up to 70 percent of all cervical cancers and about 90 percent of genital warts. In other words, Gardasil will prevent most genital warts and most cases of cervical cancer.
