2009-02-11 New Hampshire news, business and sports-Jesse Brooks seeks conspiracy charge dismissal

When his bail was revoked last February for failing a drug test, Brooks was dealing with an addiction to opiates, said his lawyers. After being put in jail, he was allowed to receive methadone treatment but instead opted to withdraw "cold turkey" from his addiction, Anderson wrote. His good behavior while being detained at the Hillsborough and Carroll County House of Corrections is evidence he can be freed under certain conditions, Anderson said.

Brooks and Knight are the last of five alleged co-conspirators to go to trial for the murder of Jack Reid Sr. , 57, of Derry. Knights trial is scheduled to begin May 4. Benton and Joseph Vrooman, 52, of Tennessee and Las Vegas, have already pleaded guilty in connection with the case and have agreed to testify as states witnesses in exchange for the possibility of lighter sentences.

And once said of the steroid problem, "I have no doubt that they are not worse than cigarettes. " Wow. Theres someone either hopelessly out of touch or so blind, in his desire to "protect" the players, hed say anything out of pure arrogance. Orza has twice been accused of tipping off players to imminent drug tests, first in the Mitchell Report and now in the Sports Illustrated story (alleging that Orza did just that with Rodriguez in September of 2004). Sources told S. I. that Orza tried to either suppress or alter the information supplied by the 2003 survey testing, because if less than 5 percent of the players turned up positive, MLB would have given up the idea of permanent testing. But he couldnt pull it off, and when the figure was announced at "5 to 7 percent," the first testing program was launched. Orza is also blamed for a

I couldnt sustain that argument because the scholars involved (including Ronald Ferguson, David Grissmer and Abigail and Stephan Thernstrom) are brilliant people whose work always meets the highest standards of professional inquiry. I was trying to decide how to sort this out when University of California at Los Angeles sociologist Meredith Phillips, one of my favorite writers on student achievement, came to the rescue with an intriguing take in a chapter of a new book, Steady Gains and Stalled Progress: Inequality and the Black-White Test Score Gap, edited by Katherine Magnuson of the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Jane Waldfogel of Columbia University and published by the Russell Sage Foundation.

2009-02-06 Murder conspiracy charges dropped Argus Leader

The facts supporting the conviction came from a urine test, which showed Midmore had cocaine and marijuana in his body when he was arrested .

In exchange for his dismissal, 35-year-old John Midmore of Valparaiso, Ind. , pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and was sentenced to 90 days of probation. Retired Circuit Judge Gene Kean ordered the conviction sealed as long as Midmore behaves himself until that time.

Defense lawyer David Kenner argued a conviction for mere cocaine possession would not have warranted the kind of jail time - two years and three months - that Midmore sat before the attempted murder trial. The judge agreed, partly because Midmore has no criminal history.

2009-02-06 Victims family upset by plea deal in killing

A first test of ONeals blood showed no alcohol or drugs. A urine test taken in 2007 showed no cocaine but did show signs that cocaine had recently been in ONeals system, Hall said.

Aaron Jarrett Jr. watches as Mary Lyons protests Jarretts plea bargain in the death of her son, Philnando ONeal.

Lyons said that she questions whether the urine test supports Jarretts version, and why it was done after the first clean test.

Jarrett said he started talking to neighbors and then joined them in smoking crack cocaine. ONeal was there and was smoking, Jarrett said.
